The sound of your home is as individual and unique as you are. These sounds are often due to the materials which make up your home expanding and contracting.

However, other external forces are adding to your home’s natural harmony. Some of these might include the ticking of a clock or alarm system, the rattling of leaves and branches of nearby trees, or sometimes even scratching or tapping in the spaces above your head.

All these sounds can be quite soothing, except when it’s scratching and tiny footsteps running about your roof. If you hear these sounds in and around your roof, you may have a pest infestation problem.

Pests in your attic and rooftop can cause severe damage to your roofing materials. They can cause breakages, mold growth, foul odors, rot, and attract even more of the nasty little friends. If you think that pests may be the cause of the noises in your roofing system, these are the four most likely culprits.

Birds

Birds often use roofs as a safe place to build their nests, but they may end up breaking off pieces of your roofing materials. Their droppings can also cause foul odors and mold growth in the home.

Rodents

Rodents are the most common pests in the homes and rooftops of homes and businesses alike. These nasty creatures tend to burrow, feed and breed in your roofing system.

Rodents tend to carry dangerous diseases, so their presence in your rooftop is not something that you would welcome.

Insects

Chances are if you’re able to hear the movements of insects in your roofing system, there’s likely an entire nest of them. Insects nesting in your roof can be quite dangerous, depending on the insect.

Bees, wasps, and spiders can crawl into the interior of your home and can sting or bite you or a member of your family.

Snakes

Ectothermic animals, like snakes, rely on outside heat sources to keep their body temperature up and are always looking for a cozy place to curl up and keep warm. The best spots? Your attic, of course.

As great as this is for snakes, it’s not the ideal situation for you and your family. Snakes can be dangerous, especially if they’re venomous. They’ll also bring their ‘food,’ which may consist of dead rats or mice, into your home leading to the spread of nasty diseases and illnesses.

To protect the health and longevity of your roofing system, it’s best to call animal control and rid your home and roof of these disease-carrying pests.
